Do you want real radio — actual RF (radio frequency) communication that keeps working when the power grid, cell towers, and internet all go down? Not cellular hacks.

1. Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) — Best for True Long-Distance Resilience

This is the gold standard for long-distance communication that doesn’t depend on any infrastructure.

  • HF bands (3–30 MHz) can reach hundreds or thousands of miles via skywave propagation — even across continents — with no cell towers or repeaters needed.
  • Works when everything else is down (widely used in disasters, hurricanes, earthquakes).
  • Can be completely off-grid: battery, solar, generator, or even hand-crank powered.
  • Downsides: Requires a license (Technician is entry-level and not too hard; General or Extra unlocks full HF). You need to learn basic radio theory and operating practices.

Realistic starter setups:

  • Portable HF transceiver (e.g., Icom IC-705, Yaesu FT-818/818ND, or more affordable QRP rigs) + good antenna (wire dipole, vertical, or portable like a Buddipole).
  • Power: 12V deep-cycle battery + small solar panel.

2. GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service)

A good middle ground for regional/long-range voice comms without the full ham commitment.

  • Higher power than FRS walkie-talkies.
  • Repeaters can extend range dramatically (many areas have GMRS repeaters).
  • License is easy and cheap — $35 for 10 years, covers your whole family.
  • Still real RF — works radio-to-radio or via repeaters you don’t control.
  • Can be powered independently.

Popular reliable gear: Wouxun, Midland, or Retevis GMRS radios.

3. CB Radio (Citizens Band)

No license required. 11-meter band has real long-distance potential (especially with a good antenna and skip conditions).

  • Trucks use it for a reason — it can go hundreds of miles under the right conditions.
  • Simple and rugged.
  • Downside: Can be noisy/crowded, and range is less predictable than HF ham.

4. Modern Off-Grid Mesh (Text/Data Focused)

  • Meshtastic (LoRa-based) or goTenna — create your own mesh network with no cell service or internet.
  • Very low power, solar-friendly, works when grid is down.
  • Great for groups in the same general area (tens of miles depending on terrain/antennas).
  • Not great for voice or true continental distances.

5. Satellite (When You Need Global Coverage)

If you want communication that works anywhere on Earth regardless of local infrastructure:

  • Garmin inReach, Zoleo, or Somewear satellite messengers (text + SOS, some voice).
  • Full satellite phones (Iridium).
  • These are truly independent of the terrestrial grid.

Important reality check: Nothing is 100% immune to everything. HF radio can be affected by solar flares or extreme space weather. Satellite needs a clear view of the sky. But all of the above are dramatically more resilient than anything that depends on cell towers or the commercial power grid.
