Pickleball, Padel, and… Typti(r)?? Be careful of this new, aggressive, intellectual property scheme.

As I was reading about a new “exciting” derivative of pickleball and padel, i came across something called “Typti”. I immediately thought this would be a good opportunity to register some relevant and generic keyword domain names, in the event this “sport” takes off. I was immediately stopped in my tracks – this is a trademarked “game”, that uses proprietary equipment and employs expensive licensing fees. While that might be fine, they are also leveraging the fact that the game is played on the existing infrastructure of the other, generic games, specifically the existing courts. So, they want to be proprietary, but they want to exploit the existing infrastructure.

“Pickleball” and “Padel” have largely become generic names for their respective sports in common usage. However, the launch of TYPTI represents a shift toward more aggressive “intellectual property (IP) plays, where the sport’s rules, equipment, and monetization are tightly controlled by a single corporate entity.

Trademark Status: Pickleball and Padel

Originally trademarked as “Pickle-ball” (with a hyphen) by Pickle-ball, Inc. in 1974. Today, while that specific mark exists, the term “pickleball” is widely considered a generic term like “tennis” or “baseball”.

You can use the word “pickleball” to describe the game without permission, though hundreds of trademarks exist for specific pickleball brands, logos, and paddle technologies.

Like pickleball, “padel” is a generic name for the sport. Various entities have registered trademarks for specific phrases (e.g., “World Padel Network®” or “Real Padel”), but no one owns the exclusive right to the word “padel” for the sport itself.

Is TYPTI an “Intellectual Property Play”?
Critics and industry analysts suggest that TYPTI is indeed designed as a modern IP play, prioritizing a high-octane commercial venture over the organic grassroots growth seen in older sports.

Proprietary Equipment: Unlike pickleball, which allows a vast ecosystem of manufacturers, TYPTI is built around patented rackets and balls specifically designed for the sport. This forces players and clubs into a proprietary ecosystem controlled by Typti, Inc..

Monetization First: The business model is a “proactive part of the game,” focusing on selling design, equipment, and media rights for tournaments. Some veterans view it as a tactical rebranding of existing formats (like touchtennis) designed to create new revenue streams.

Controlled Governing Body: TYPTI has launched with its own governing body, professional tour, and celebrity-backed national circuit from the outset, rather than letting these evolve naturally.

The Industry Context
The shift toward IP-heavy sports coincides with a recent surge in patent litigation within the industry. For example, in early April 2026, JOOLA filed patent infringement lawsuits against 11 rival companies over paddle core technology. This environment suggests that while the names of the games may remain generic, the technology and brands within them are becoming high-stakes intellectual property battlegrounds.
